Auror

Auror

In the Harry Potter series of novels, Aurors
are employees of the Ministry of Magic who track down and
capture Dark Wizards, especially members of Lord
Voldemort's band of Death Eaters.

They are required to train extensively in advanced magical
fighting, and must have good academic credentials before they are
accepted on a training programme (which normally lasts three
years). The job is seen as glamorous by some, as there is a great
deal of danger involved and it is extremely difficult to join the
ranks of the Aurors. Harry Potter becomes increasingly
interested in becoming an Auror as the novels progress.

According to Professor Minerva McGonagall, to be accepted for
Auror training, one has to have a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s (and
no grade lower than "Exceeds Expectations") in tough subjects such
as Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms
and Herbology. Then, prospective Aurors are required to undergo a
stringent series of character and aptitude tests to show they react
well under pressure and have very high skills in practical
defence.

In the war during Voldemort's first rise to power, Aurors were
authorized to use The
Unforgivable Curses on suspected Death Eaters and criminals.
This means that they were given the licence to kill, coerce and
torture. In the Second War, it is unclear whether or not they have
been issued the same rights, but it is probable that they have
been.

Auror training takes three years, and two of the disciplines
included are "Concealment and Disguise" and "Stealth and Tracking".
When they capture Dark wizards, the criminals are usually sent to
Azkaban
- however, a duel with a Dark wizard can often become a fight to
the death.

On rare occasions, they are used to guard high profile
personalities or people who are in great danger but are protected
by the Ministry. The Ministry had enlisted them to protect Harry
Potter and Hogwarts School
of Witchcraft and Wizardry by the time of The Half Blood
Prince
. Prior to this, in The Order of the Phoenix, the
Order had Auror members who were part of the Advance Guard which
protected Harry.

The name "Auror" probably derives from Aurora, the Latin
name for the dawn; that is, an end to darkness.

Aurors seen in the series include:

  • Rufus Scrimgeour (Head of the office prior
to being appointed Minister of Magic)[HP6]

  • Alastor Moody (now retired)

  • Kingsley Shacklebolt

  • Nymphadora Tonks

Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody is a fictional character in the Harry
Potter
series of books, an ex-Auror working for
the Order of the Phoenix.

As an experienced Auror, who has lost several body parts, including an
eye, leg, and part of his
nose in
fighting practitioners of the Dark Arts, Moody is cautious—some
might say paranoid—and refuses to eat or drink anything which he
himself has not prepared. He is particularly conspicuous because of
his peculiar magical eye which can see through walls, doors, and
the back of his own head (hence the nickname "Mad-Eye").

Brendan Gleeson plays Moody on screen in
Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire
.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or
ending details follow.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet
of Fire
, Moody was appointed as the Defence Against the Dark Arts
teacher at Hogwarts. Before the school year began, however, he
was locked up in a chest by Barty Crouch Jr, a faithful follower of
Voldemort, who used a Polyjuice Potion to take his
form in order to replace him. Moody owes his life to the fact that
one ingredient of the Polyjuice Potion is a part of the person
whose form is to be assumed, such as a tuft of hair. Crouch Jr.
needed to keep him alive, under the Imperius Curse, so he would be
able to use his hair in the potion and question him. Moody's habit
of carrying his own drink allowed Crouch to take the Potion
regularly without raising suspicion.

On the night of the final task, Crouch attempted to kill
Harry, but was stopped by Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall and Severus
Snape. Having neglected to take his hourly dose of potion,
Crouch returned to his own appearance and, under the influence of
Veritaserum, he
admitted everything, and Dumbledore rescued the real Moody who was
locked in his own magical trunk. A dementor takes
Crouch's soul before he can repeat his story to Cornelius Fudge.

Harry first meets the genuine Moody just prior to his fifth year
at Hogwarts, in Harry Potter and
the Order of the Phoenix
. In that book, Moody has joined
the newly re-formed Order of the Phoenix, and is usually
accompanied by fellow Order members Nymphadora Tonks and Remus
Lupin, especially while protecting Harry. He appears at the
climax of that book, along with Lupin, Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Sirius
Black.

His only appearance in Harry Potter and the
Half-Blood Prince is at the end, when he attends Albus Dumbledore's funeral.

Alastor ("avenger") is a household god in
Greek
myth called on by families to visit fury upon those who have
wronged them.

In a slight alteration made for the film, Moody's nose is still
intact. In the book, he blames Evan
Rosier for the loss of the end of his nose. In the film, he
blames Rosier for the loss of his eye instead.

Trivia: His name may derive from Aleister Crowley, as there are similarities
between them.
