Biography

Prior to the Harry Potter novels

Harry is famous in the wizarding world for his encounter with theevil Lord Voldemort, one of the most powerfulwizards ofall time and the primary antagonist villain in theseries, when he was just a year old. Voldemort mysteriously losthis powers in the encounter and was severely crippled, although hesurvived.

James and Lily Potter were killed inthis incident in 1981 while protecting baby Harry from Voldemort'sattack. James died first, and Lily's dying act - choosing tosacrifice herself to save her infant son - placed Harry under anancient magic that protected him. Subsequently, AvadaKedavra, the killing curse that was used against Harry byVoldemort, backfired and Harry survived. This resulted in the lossof Voldemort's powers, as well as his exile and eventual declinefrom a position of power and fear in the wizarding world. Thisevent led to Harry being heralded as a celebrity - "the boy wholived"; due to him being the only person to ever survive theAvada Kedavra curse - a lightning bolt-shaped scar on hisforehead being the sole remnant of the incident.

Despite the fact that Harry survived Voldemort's attemptedmurder, he still has no idea as to why Voldemort lost his powers -in Harry Potter andthe Chamber of Secrets, Harry confirms this fact whenVoldemort questions him:

I don't know why you lost your powers that night, but I knowwhy you couldn't kill me ...

After the death of his parents, Harry is forced to live with theonly family he had left - his mother's sister, Petunia Dursley, and herhusband, Vernon, in the small town ofLittle Whinging in Surrey, England. TheDursleys live at number four, Privet Drive in a large, impeccablymaintained four-bedroom house and seem to be moderately well off;however, they neglected Harry in favour of their own son Dudley and in an attempt toremove all traces of his magical self to make him "normal," kepthim fully isolated from the wizarding world.

It is in many ways important that Harry is a half-blood- that is, the offspring of a Muggle-born parent. Through his father James is adescendant of the pure-blood Potter line, but his mother, Lily Evans(later Lily Potter) is a Muggle-born witch: a witch born into aMuggle family. Harry is therefore a half-blood, and this issignificant to the plot in different ways.

Family

Harry James Potter was born on the 31st of July, 1980, to Jamesand Lily Potter. Not much is known about Harry's relations. Hismother was born Lily Evans, into a Muggle family, and after hisparents' death he was sent to live with his mother's sister,Petunia Dursley, and her family. Harry's father, James Potter, wasborn into a pureblood wizarding family, to somewhat elderly (bywizarding standards) parents. This could possibly mean that Harryis distantly related to other pureblood families through hisfather, as Sirius Black once told him that all the oldpureblood families are related through intermarriage.

Harry may also be related to his godfather, Sirius Black. Jamesand Sirius may have actually been first cousins once-removed - notsurprising, given the size of the Black family. A Charlus Potterwas married to Dorea Black, granddaughter of Phineas NigellusBlack. Some fans speculate that Dorea and Charlus may have beenJames's parents - however, this seems to contradict Rowling'sstatements that James's parents were "old in wizarding terms" whenthey died, since she has also said that wizards have "a much longerlife-expectancy than Muggles" (Griselda Marchbanks is known to beover 160) - Dorea died at only 57. On the other hand, Charlus andDorea were born into the same generation as Sirius's grandparents,so it is still possible that they might be James' parents. However,if this was indeed true it would have been revealed in the books bynow.

Life and adventures while at Hogwarts

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Shortly after this revelation, Harry began his studies atHogwartsSchool of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There he was placed inGryffindor House, and made quick friends withRonWeasley and later Hermione Granger. DracoMalfoy, however, who is placed in Slytherin, becomes Harry's archnemesis atHogwarts. Harry shares his dormitory with Ron, Neville Longbottom, Seamus Finnigan andDean Thomas. Harry'sfirst year was marked by many things, such as him being chosen forthe position of Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditchteam due to his natural flying abilities, making him the youngesthouse player in a century.

The protection granted to Harry by Lily's self-sacrifice helpedhim again, when Lord Voldemort returned secretly to the wizardingworld to search for the Philosopher's Stone in his quest toregain a body. Using Hogwarts teacher Professor Quirrell as a host body,Voldemort came to Hogwarts in his search for the stone. Harrymanaged to thwart Voldemort and survived a confrontation with himon account of the protection afforded to him by his mother's finalact. Voldemort was unable to touch Harry and fled, leaving Quirrellto die.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

In Harry Potter andthe Chamber of Secrets, Harry faced more challenges, frommerely annoying (such as Gilderoy Lockhart's attempt to exploit hisfame, Colin Creevey's hero worshipping, andostracision by most of the school after being revealed as aparselmouth) to deadly in the form of a Basiliskreleased by the spirit of Tom Riddle from the aforementioned chamberwhile controlling Ginny Weasley by means of diarycontaining part of his soul (see Horcrux).

Harry proved his mettle at the climax of the book by rescuingGinny, killing the Basilisk with the sword of Godric Gryffindor and defeating Riddle bystabbing the diary with one the basilisk's poisonous teeth, destroying it and the spirit of Riddle.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

In Harry Potter andthe Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry started to change. Hedeveloped angry feelings because he believed SiriusBlack to be responsible for the betrayal of his parents'wherabouts to Voldemort. Harry also discovered that Black was hisfather's best friend, as well as Harry's godfather. Later on, hefound that it was not Sirius who betrayed his parents, but aservant of Lord Voldemort's named Peter Pettigrew, who was another friend ofHarry's father and of Sirius. By the end of the story, Siriusoffered Harry something he has wanted all his life: a home awayfrom the Dursley's. Harry was quick to accept, only to lose thisopportunity when Sirius was forced to go on the run from theauthorities, who still believed him to be a murderer.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

In Harry Potter and the Gobletof Fire, Harry has been chosen to compete in the Triwizard Tournament, a competition thatincludes champions from three different schools; Hogwarts School ofWitchcraft and Wizardry, BeauxbatonsAcademy of Magic, and Durmstrang Institute. Although Albus Dumbledore put an age limit of atleast seventeen on the competition, Harry's name was mysteriouslyentered into the competition, and he was forced to compete as setforth by the rules made by the Ministry of Magic. Harry is forced to facea fierce dragon, swim underwater for an hour to rescue his bestfriend Ron, and find his way through a dangerous maze to get theTriwizard Cup. In the maze, Harry and CedricDiggory, the other Hogwarts champion, reach the Cup at the sametime after defeating an Acromantula. Harry saves Cedric, who previously had the lead, and urges him to go ahead and take theCup. Cedric refuses, so he and Harry decide to tie, grasping theCup at the same time. They were not aware that the Cup was aportkey, which transported them to the graveyard where LordVoldemort's father was buried and where Voldemort himselfawaits. Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, hisservant, kills Cedric with the Avada Kedavra curse, at therequest of Voldemort, whom he is carrying. A spell is performedusing the bone of Voldemort's father, the flesh (a hand) of hisservant and the blood of his enemy (Harry) and Lord Voldemortreturns to a near-human form. It is then that he summons hisDeath Eaters to his side, and ridicules them fornot searching for him sooner. He then decides to "duel" with Harrybefore killing him. Unbeknownst to Voldemort, his wand and Harry'sare brother wands (having the same core, a phoenix feather belonging to Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes), and dueto that fact, when a spell is cast simultaneously from each, theyform a connection, known as Priori Incantatem. This happens in thegraveyard, and the spirits of those that Voldemort killed emergedfrom his wand, including those of Lily and James Potter. They helpHarry to escape from the graveyard, by way of the portkey, andHarry arrives back at Hogwarts with Cedric's body in tow. Cedric'sspirit asked him to bring it back for his parent's sake. It is inthis novel that Lord Voldemort returned to power.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

In Harry Potter andthe Order of the Phoenix, Harry and his cousin Dudley areattacked by Dementors. Harry does the Patronus Charm to repel them. As Harry isunderage he is summoned to the Ministry of Magic for a hearing. Heis rescued from the Dursleys by a group of wizards, and istaken to Number 12 Grimmauld Place.Grimmauld Place is the Black Family's ancestral home, and nowHeadquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. There, Harry iswith his godfather, Sirius Black, again and learns that theOrder of the Phoenix is a group of wizards who previously joinedforces to fight against LordVoldemort the last time he was in power, and who have regroupednow that Voldemort has returned power.

Harry attends the Ministry of Magic hearing but is eventuallylet off based on the testimony by ArabellaFigg and Dumbledore. Harry, however, learns that in the widerwizarding community, he and Albus Dumbledore are being called liars, because Harry announced that Lord Voldemort has returned andregrouped with his loyal Death Eaters. The Ministry of Magic actively rejects the"rumors" that Voldemort has returned, because they fear theconsequences if it was true, and thus go to great effort tomaintain that Voldemort has not returned.

The Ministry becomes paranoid that Dumbledore may try to raisean army of supporters and overthrow the Ministry, so the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, places a new administratorin the school to work as a spy. Dolores Umbridge becomes the newest teacherin the Defence Against the DarkArts position, and is given title of High Inquisitor, the firstever at Hogwarts. Her position as High Inquisitor enablesher to arbitrarily change the education laws and school rules, sothat the Ministry has more direct control of what happens atHogwarts, severely limiting the freedoms of the students. Sheattempts to force Harry to renounce his claims about Voldemort, andmatch his story with the official Ministry position. Harry refusesto change his story, because he knows it is the truth and believesthe wizarding world needs to know. Umbridge punishes him for"lying" and noncooperation by making him write lines with a quill that uses hisown blood as ink. She also bans him from playing Quidditch.

Throughout the year Harry is haunted by visions, one of whichleads to the rescue of ArthurWeasley after he is attacked by Nagini,Voldemort's pet snake. While visiting Mr. Weasley at St. Mungo's Hospital,Harry inadvertantly learns that these visions are visits intoVoldemort's subconcious, and becomes afraid that he is in factbeing posessed by Voldemort.

After Voldemort becomes aware of Harry's journeys into his mind,he developes a plan to lead Harry to believe that he is holdingSirius captive in the Ministry of Magic, and Harry does, indeed, come to "rescue" Sirius. Harry is accompanied by Dumbledore's Army members RonWeasley, Hermione Granger, GinnyWeasley, Neville Longbottom and LunaLovegood. They are confronted by Voldemort's DeathEaters, who are attempting to steal a recording of the prophecy involving Harry and Voldemort.Harry and his friends are rescued by the Order of the Pheonix, butare still severely hurt. During the tussle, Sirius is killed by hiscousin, Bellatrix Lestrange. Voldemort arrives and attempts, onceagain, to kill Harry. The Order of Phoenix wizards arrive to joinin the fight, and Dumbledore returns to confront Voldemort andprotect the students.

This is the first and only battle between Dumbledore andVoldemort. Cornelius Fudge and other Ministry employeesarrive and see Voldemort, who promptly Disapparates. The Ministry are forced tofinally accept Harry and Dumbledore's claims that Voldemort hasreturned. Back at Hogwarts, Dumbledore finally explains to Harrythat it was the prophecy that caused Voldemort toattempt to kill Harry when he was a child.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

In Harry Potter and theHalf-Blood Prince, the wizarding population had come toconsider Harry to be the "Chosen One," as a result of a prophecy concerning Harry and Voldemort.Dumbledore placed a great deal of trust in Harry, sharing with himmemories viewed in the Pensieve regarding LordVoldemort's past. He took Harry on an expedition to retrieve asupposed Horcrux, an object that contained a piece ofVoldemort's soul and which would have to be destroyed in order torender Voldemort mortal. This Horcrux was hidden in the centre ofan Inferius-infested lake within a secluded cave. Thisset in motion events that led to SeverusSnape killing Dumbledore when the Death Eaters invadedHogwarts at the climax of the story. After Dumbledore's deathHarry resolved that, whether Hogwarts remained open or not, hewould not return to the school; instead, he decided to destroyVoldemort's four remaining Horcruxes. Draco Malfoy had a much larger rolein this book; it was he who let the Death Eaters into Hogwartsthrough a Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement. The book ends with Ronand Hermione vowing to stick with Harry in his search for theHorcruxes even though this involves the prospect of not returningto Hogwarts. The reaffirmation of their loyalty to Harry follows ayear when the strong bonds between the trio were thoroughly tested. This gesture, along with Harry’s approaching 17th birthday (the ageof adulthood in the wizarding world), and an implied lack ofHogwarts in the final book are all symbolic of the end of anyvestige of childhood innocence which still remained in each of thecharacters such that they are finally ready to face Voldemort, together.

Book Seven

The unreleased Book Seven is expected to followHarry's hunt for the remaining Horcruxes, and the finalconfrontation with Voldemort himself, presumably with Ron andHermione's aid.

Appearance, character and relationships

Harry is frequently told that he greatly resembles his fatherJames, but that he has his mother Lily'sbright green eyes. There is speculation that the resemblance of hiseyes to his mother's will play a significant role in the next andfinal book. The lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead, aremnant of his first meeting with Voldemort, has a great deal ofprominence in the books. The scar serves as both a reminder ofVoldemort's attempt to kill him as a baby and as an indicator ofVoldemort's presence and/or severe mood swings. Also mentioned inthe books is Harry's untidy black hair, which, to Aunt Petunia'schagrin, never wants to lay down properly. Harry is alsocharacterized by his trademarked round eyeglasses.

Harry's greatest desire is to be normal with a family that loveshim, and for everyone he cares about to be safe and happy. He alsocomes to realize that this will never truly be possible as long asVoldemort still exists in any form. Harry often puts himself atrisk for other people, and often tries to convince others not toput themselves in danger. For example, in the first book,Harry Potter andthe Philosopher's Stone, he initially does not wantRon and Hermione to attempt to locate the Philosopher's Stone with him. This alsooccurs in Harry Potter andthe Order of the Phoenix when Ginny, Neville and Lunawish to join Harry, Ron, and Hermione on a rescue mission.

However, Harry is depicted with many flaws. He can be angeredeasily when his parents or others about whom he cares are insulted,or when people do not believe him. Like Ron, he is not alwaysdiligent with his studies. In Order of the Phoenix, Harryappears more disturbed and troubled, and is extremelytemperamental, as he has to endure the entire wizarding worldbelieving him to be an attention-seeking liar, along with thenormal difficulties of being a teenager. Sometimes, Harry even getsangry with Ron and Hermione, especially when they argue with eachother; most notably so when Ron and Harry have a row that lastsnearly a month in Harry Potter and the Gobletof Fire.

Harry has always been (and at times felt) isolated and alone. Hehas lost his parents, his godfather, and finally his lastprotector, Dumbledore. He tends to lean to towardsRemus Lupin and the Weasleys whenever he needshelp or advice. Mrs. Weasley in particular is something of amother figure for Harry, and she treats him as her son. At othertimes, Hagrid will offer support to Harry but as heprogresses as a teenager, his relationship with Hagrid diminishesever so slightly.

Harry has a very strong sense of loyalty to others and expectsloyalty in return. This streak has often prevented Harry fromlooking at things objectively and will occasionally prevent himfrom heeding constructive criticism even from friends such asHermione.

Harry tends to feel very concerned about whom he can trust andwhom he cannot. For example, Harry is reluctant to trust SeverusSnape, the Potions Master, even though Snape has the open andfirm confidence of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Since Harry has beenraised by the abusive and neglectful Dursleys, and has experiencednightmarish events (witnessing the deaths of his schoolmateCedric Diggory in Goblet of Fire, hisgodfather Sirius Black in Order of thePhoenix and his mentor Dumbledore in Half-BloodPrince), Harry has been forced to grow up and mature at avery early age. As one of the most controversial and famous figuresin the wizarding world, he has also been subject to vicious slanderand gossip, and his indignation at this has made him quick topounce when he feels misunderstood. Harry's feelings of isolationincrease at the end of Order of the Phoenix when he learns that he alone must battleVoldemort to the death.

Romantic attachments

Harry's relationship with Cho has roots as early as Prisonerof Azkaban, where he experiences several bouts of nervousnesswhen in her presence; it is only a year later, however, that hiscrush on her truly develops, and finally gathers the courage to askher to the Yule Ball, only to find out that she has by then becomeCedric Diggory's girlfriend. Cho and Cedricare tragically torn apart by Cedric's death in the end of Gobletof Fire and, by the start of his fifth year, Harry becomes thenew focus of Cho's attention. He manages an on-and-off relationshipwith her throughout the year, even getting his first kiss with herunder some mistletoe, but ultimately it is not to last. Harryand Cho are just not on the same wavelength; Cho is going throughextreme emotions and grief over the death of CedricDiggory, leaning on Harry as a stand-in for Diggory instead offacing his death and moving on, while Harry is expecting a simplerrelationship that would relieve his stress rather than amplify it.Cho's aforementioned misplaced jealousy of Hermione also adds tothis dissonance, which reaches a breaking point when Cho defendsMarietta Edgecombe's betrayal of Dumbledore's Army, something which Harrysees as absolutely inexcusable. Harry and Cho never officiallybreak up; they just slowly drift apart. By the end of Order ofthe Pheonix, Cho belongs in Harry's mind to the "otheruniverse" that he was forced to leave behind with Sirius' death, and he finds that he has no emotions left for her.

Harry's failed relationship with Cho is a contrast to hiseventual relationship with GinnyWeasley, Ron's younger sister, who J.K. Rowling has said shehas set up eventually to become Harry's "ideal girl" and "totalequal"[2]. Ginny's (very obvious) unrequited crush onHarry, introduced in Philospher's Stone and a minor plotlinethroughout Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, apparently fades away in Order of the Phoenix with Hermioneoff-handedly informing Harry that Ginny finally "got over" him. Sheindeed appears to have done just that; her shyness when aroundHarry disappears completely and he finally gets to interact withthe girl that, according to Ron, "never shuts up". During this yearGinny often puts the moody and temperamental Harry in his placewhen he is being unfair to her, and is perhaps the most successfulin dealing with his dark moods; notably, when Harry isdisillusioned - having found out that his father was indeed asarrogant as Snape always claimed - and wants to talk to Siriusabout it even though under Dolores Umbridge's reign this would behighly dangerous and perhaps impossible, he ends up confessing toGinny, feeling secure enough that she won't judge him. Theirsimilar experiences of being "tainted" by Voldemort and strugglingto overcome it are a binding thread between the two, as is theirsimilar sense of humour (they often share jokes simply by meetingeach other's eyes, a trend that goes back to Prisoner ofAzkaban).

Most ironically, Half-Blood Prince sees a completerole-reversal with Harry developing unrequited feelings for anapparently disinterested Ginny, with which he struggles throughoutthe year (including extreme jealousy of DeanThomas, her boyfriend, beyond what he felt about Cedric Diggorytwo years before, colourfully personified as the "scaly beast"inside him). Ron vocally disapproves of Ginny's relationship withDean, which Harry interprets as him disapproving of her havinganyone as a boyfriend, further complicating the situationand causing Harry to believe that he will have to choose betweenattempting a relationship with Ginny and keeping his friendshipwith Ron. Harry's pessimism ultimately turns out to have beenunfounded. Ginny and Dean break up, and when Harry is swept up inthe high of Gryffindor's Quidditch Cup victory celebrations, hespontaneously kisses her in front of the whole Common Room.Hermione is shown to be beaming and Ron, who obviously has mixedfeelings about letting his best friend kiss his sister, expresseshis approval by giving a tiny nod of the head that Harryunderstands to mean, "Well – if you must."

By the end of Half-Blood Prince, Harry breaks off hisrelationship with Ginny in an attempt to ensure her safety, fearingthat Voldemort would target her specifically once he learned oftheir relationship. Ginny accepts this decision, telling him thatmaybe his "hero complex" is a part of why she likes him so much, and confessing that she never truly gave up on him.
