Arabella Doreen Figg (more often Mrs Figg)
is a Harry Potter character who surreptitiously
watches over Harry Potter while he's home with the Dursleys. She is first mentioned as "Mrs
Figg", a caretaker of young Harry in Harry Potter and
the Philosopher's Stone
. She has a lifelong love of cats
and often shows her photos of these cats to Harry, much to his
displeasure.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or
ending details follow.

Though she maintains a good Muggle cover, Mrs
Figg is actually one of the luckier squibs. She "does a roaring
trade" in cross-bred cats and Kneazles, their magical variant.
Mrs Figg even belongs to the Order of the Phoenix and functions as
Dumbledore's Muggle liaison.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet
of Fire
, Professor Albus Dumbledore refers to "Arabella Figg"
as part of "the old crowd", giving the first clues of her true
identity. Author J.K. Rowling confirmed that the two characters
are the same person, placed near Harry's childhood home to keep an
eye on him.

In Harry Potter and
the Order of the Phoenix
she aids Harry Potter after he and
his cousin Dudley Dursley are attacked by two dementors, and
chooses this time to reveal herself to him. When the Ministry of Magic tries to have Harry
expelled from Hogwarts for using magic to save himself, Mrs Figg's
testimony before the Wizengamot is crucial in allowing Harry to
continue his studies. She also reveals that she deliberately made
Harry's stays unpleasant so that the Dursleys would continue to
send him to her.

According to J.K. Rowling's website, Squibs are actually
incapable of seeing dementors. However, Mrs Figg was familiar with
the negative feelings caused by those creatures, so she was able to
testify on Harry's behalf before the Wizengamot without committing
perjury,
although she apparently lied about being able to see the
dementors.

In Harry Potter and the
Half Blood Prince, Figg attends Dumbledore's funeral at
Hogwarts.
